“Don’t try to be perfect. Just try to be better than you were yesterday.”
Reading and writing are the primary things that every student learns once they get admitted to the school. These two elements are the stepping stone of getting knowledge and being educated. You need to write hundreds of things from elementary classes until you end your academic journey. It can be a letter of absence for your illness or a fun letter to your best friend. It can be the first essay in your junior grades or the final dissertation of your post-graduation course. Whatever your form of writing is, there are certain guidelines and rules that every writer must abide by to construct a perfect essay or any piece of writing.
Students nowadays always prefer to take the easier route of hiring essay help services to write their school or college assignments. They do not have the time to spend hours researching and writing such complex topics.
But, it is also essential to at least know the basics of writing.
On that note, here are five best ways to improve your writing skills –
- Use simple words and phrases
It is self-explanatory that when you use simple words in the same sentences, that results in a simpler form of writing. However, when you use unnecessarily complicated words, sometimes the sentences’ meaning seems different from what they actually should mean.
To give you better clarity, here are two tables that explain the different meanings of the same words. It also depicts how they are used in English Literature.
High-Level Word Table
- A great number of
- Not only X but also Y
You can replace such high-level words with synonymous simple words like –
- Until Now
- X and Y
- Minimize the number of negatives in a sentence
There may be times when you need to write about what cannot be done. You must be aware that the readers tend to subconsciously “flip” the essence of the statements whenever you use a negative form. This may not cause problems if you use such forms only once or twice in your writing. But, if the frequency of such negative words is higher, that increases the cognitive pressure on the reader. They struggle to process the words, and the sentences seem more complex to follow.
For example, A scientific test did not reject the hypothesis. So, the hypothesis is that students cannot execute as well. This is because they do not have less expensive apparatus that was not supported.
In this sentence, the phrase “did not reject the hypothesis” is a standard phrase with only one negative statement. If you continue reading the whole paragraph, you may observe that as the number of negative statements kept on increasing, the statement got more complex. There are instances where two negative sentences cancel out each other. But it is always better to eliminate negative words from your writing from the start. Lesser negative words are always clearer to understand.
For example, rewrite the same sentence as “A scientific test did not reject the hypothesis. So it is unclear whether student performance is improved by using more expensive apparatus.”
As you can understand, the second sentence is much easier to understand since it has much lesser negative words.
- Avoid writing chunky sentences
Short sentences are always easier to read. However, if you tend to make them extremely short, they sound choppy. Super short sentences feel like just a few random words and not a well-structured sentence. Ideally, the sentences must be a combination of short and long. For example, if you write a novel, ideally, you must write that in short, simple sentences. That makes it more readable than when using long, complex sentences.
Let us see a couple of examples of how short sentences can effectively replace long sentences –
Long Sentence –
- We heated the sample to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, after which we cooled it down at room temperature for two hours and then freeze them again for one hour to assess its crystallization.
We can replace it with a shorter sentence like –
- We heated the sample to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and cooled it at room temperature for two hours. Then, we freeze it for another one hour to assess crystallization.
Long Sentence –
- Hatchbacks and commercial delivery trucks are smaller and bigger than average-sized vehicles and therefore require less and more resources, respectively.
You can see how confusing it becomes. We can remove the confusion with shorter sentences like –
- Hatchbacks are smaller than average-sized vehicles and therefore require lesser resources. However, commercial delivery trucks are bigger than average-sized cars and require more resources.
So, you can understand how balance is the key. Neither can you use too short, nor can you use too long sentences. The experts advise that you limit the number of new words in a sentence to two. That helps to create a rhythm that is necessary to write smooth sentences.
- Use key terms consistently
If you are fluent in English, you will always have a great stock of vocabulary. You will know how to express yourself in different ways. In literary writing, especially in fiction, writers express themselves using synonyms instead of overusing the same words.
However, the approach is different in the case of research papers. There, the aim remains to convey the content’s message and not showcase writing abilities. Since research papers mostly contain technical terms, using synonyms may change the sentence’s meaning. For example, “solar cells” can be rewritten as “photovoltaic cells.” You can use such synonyms easily in fiction, but using such lesser-known words in a research paper can be disastrous.
- Balance sophisticated and simple languages
An easy way to use sophisticated languages in your writing is to use complex connectors and transition words. They obviously must be relevant and must not change the meaning of the concepts and arguments. For example, using transition phrases like “Given that this happened” instead of “because this happened” can make a big difference.
But you must try to avoid sophisticated words while describing technical terms. You may end up changing the meaning instead, which is undesirable.
Writing is an easy task only if you know the proper techniques. Getting essay help will help you in one exam but knowing these five techniques will help you to yield better results for all the exams in your future. So, you must try to follow and practice the above-mentioned points before your next writing exercise.
